Treatment for Baby Acne – 5 Minute Guide for Parents

Treatment for Baby Acne

Contrary to some beliefs baby acne is quite common.  It derives mostly from the mother’s hormones causing babies to develop their oil glands.  This is nothing to worry about initially.  Primarily the acne can arise on the baby’s cheek.  However, a scattered pimple here and there can occur on other parts of the face or body.  Usually these are mild and go away rather quickly.  The causes can be because of spit up, the hormones from breastfeeding or when the baby’s blood pressure rises.  What are the best acne treatments for babies?

Typically they are mild causes so a treatment may not be necessary.  Even though in some cases there are a few things the parents can do to treat these unpleasant blemishes.

In general, over-the-counter medications are not recommended.  Unless it specifically states that children under two can use the product.  Read the directions carefully three or four times to make sure everything is understood.  A baby can be allergic to a lot more things, than small children or adults.  When severe acne affects a baby, a doctor’s visit may be required.

They can prescribe gentle relief for the baby.  Cysts are more severe.  These may require physician-approved antibiotics.  If there are visible cysts, it is suggested that the baby go to their pediatrician.

Treatment for this condition generally does not require any medication at all.  Washing the baby’s face after each spit up or three times a day with special baby wipes can reduce the acne.  Avoid using soap or oil products.  Quite frequently the acne will leave without any treatment.  If family pictures are near parents may want to use coverup to hide the blemishes.  However, this is not advised.  Coverup can irritate the skin causing more.  Nevertheless, family portraits are very important.  They last a lifetime.  If coverup is necessary use makeup that does not use any oils and are natural.

A pimple on a baby is nothing to stress about.  It is a rather common occurrence.  Although a severe case of acne may be a cause for concern. Whenever in doubt visit a doctor.  Causes for acne in babies can vary.  A treatment for these whiteheads or red blemishes is normally simple to use.  Alternative acne treatments are usually the case with baby acne.
